Utilizing biometrics in healthcare and public health program identity management systems can help improve patient continuity of care by accurately identifying a returning patient as the same individual represented by a digital medical record. While biometric systems can help strengthen the delivery of health services, it is not a silver bullet for identity management.

This module provided an overview of topics to consider when working towards making this impact, including how to evaluate biometric characteristic(s) and modality(ies), suggested approaches for standards and guidelines, and additional topics which include advantages or disadvantages of implementing a biometric system. Throughout this module examples were provided from research and from experiences shared from the Data Use Community.
